ISOBIOTICS Doctoral Students Comic Series: Communicating Science Through Storytelling
Episode 3 – Tritium (³H)
In this episode, doctoral candidates Rafael, Davide, and Elisa find themselves stuck: they cannot figure out how their promising drug is metabolized in their cell model.
Just when frustration starts to build, help arrives in the form of Professor Tritium - a busy scientist who momentarily steps away from nuclear fusion research to lend a hand.
With confidence and a touch of flair, Tritium proposes a clever solution: take the drug molecule and replace one of its hydrogens with him. This tiny substitution makes a big difference.
Thanks to Tritium’s radioactive nature and his convenient half-life of 12.3 years, scientists can detect and track him with great sensitivity once he is incorporated into the compound.
By inserting Tritium into the molecule, the team gains a powerful way to follow what happens to their drug in biological samples and finally visualize its metabolic pathways. Grateful for the breakthrough, the students realize just how essential Professor Tritium is for advancing drug discovery.
